Behind every great event... is an even greater group of volunteers
Volunteers play a crucial part in staging the Outback Festival
|

|
|
Since its inception in 1972, the Outback Festival has been totally organised and run by a dedicated group of volunteers who give their time freely to this significant community event. These volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes for months beforehand, and are then on the job for a very busy five days and nights during the festival.
In addition to the locals who help out, many visitors to the Outback Festival enthusiastically offer their time freely as volunteers. These friends return to Winton for every Outback Festival because they enjoy the experience of contributing to such an exciting event. While experiencing all the fun and excitement of the festival, these volunteers enjoy the added benefit of knowing they have played a vital role in staging one of Winton's most important events for the year.
There are no special skills required to be a volunteer at the Outback Festival, and there are all sorts of duties on offer, so you can nominate for something you have previous experience in, or choose to expand your repertoire of skills!
The types of activities volunteers are involved in can include time keeping, starting races, catering, assisting event coordinators, marshals, selling raffle tickets and admission entry.
We hope this year that we can encourage the participation of others outside our community to join our amazing band of volunteers.

Festival Adds CrackUP to the Program They're Whip Cracking Women with Character
|
|
|
|
Be prepared for some spectacular whip cracking action when two hilarious and fair dinkum Aussie characters take over the stage at the Outback Festival. These two ladies are delightfully witty, skilful and thoroughly ridiculous.
S. T Ruth (better known as Struth) and her young cousin Betty Anne Ute (affectionately known as Little B-Ute) have just returned from performing their unique blend of acrobatics, Aussie humour and whip cracking at the largest western event in the world, The Calgary Stampede, in Canada. In their show these two country sheilas explain the history of our iconic Australian stock whip and its traditional uses. They even demonstrate a few new ways to integrate the stockwhip into everyday 'modern' life!
Their performances include choreographed double-handed whip cracking, the mighty bullock whip, slapstick acrobatics, aerial rope skills, plenty of laughs, stunts and one liners! As part of the show, S.T Ruth will attempt to ride a full 8 seconds on a wild bull and will bring her legendary horse, Blaze, through the crowd in search of an outback cowboy to help in the show. All this is teamed with some crackin' Aussie tracks, great country sounds, larrikinism, classic Aussie sayings and a whip cracking, boot-scooting roaring finale! Amanda-Lyn Pearson (S.T Ruth) is two times runner up Queensland Women's Whip Cracking Champion and a seasoned performer with outstanding skills in circus, dance and acting. You might have seen her earlier this year at the Winton Entertainment Centre, touring her one woman comedy show Choice with the Queensland Arts Council. Katie Jane Spencer (Little B-Ute) is a dancer and character performer with a love of whip cracking, joking about and being cheeky. Together they are Crack UP!! Catch them at the Outback Festival on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September.

Discover this Age-Old Hobby for Yourself

The wide open spaces of the outback provide the perfect environment to fly a kite, and visitors to the Outback Festival can even design and build their own kite under the expert supervision of Redcliffe Kite Club members.
Four people from the club will be travelling from Redcliffe, near Brisbane, to Winton to run a series of kite-building workshops and demonstrate kite flying at the Outback Festival. Kites funded by Regional Arts Development Fund. Club President, David White, said kite flying was a great way to relax, and an activity the whole family could enjoy. "In our workshops, we provide all the materials needed to build a diamond kite. Participants can put their own designs on their kite, and we guarantee they will fly!" David said. "The workshops will be run in segments of one to two hours throughout the day and are open to all ages." The workshop costs $5 for each kite made. David and other team members are also bringing a range of kites to fly at the festival, including a trilobyte, cuttlefish, gecko, small ray and octopus. They will be demonstrating their kite-flying skills when they do some two line and four line stunt kite flying. A range of kites will also be on sale, with prices starting from as little as $8.

Comedian heads for Dry Land
Paul Brash in Festival Line-up
|
He
spends a lot of time at sea these days, touring as a guest comedian for
P&O Cruises, so the Outback Festival will definitely provide a big
change of scenery for comedian Paul Brasch when he appears in two
festival concerts.
Paul Brasch is part of the program for the Ball Bearing Drovers
Truckies concert on Thursday, 24 September and the Friday night concert
on 25 September.
Born
in Brisbane and now living in Sydney (when he's on dry land), Paul has
hosted "The Paul Brasch Comedy Show" on the Triple M network and
appeared on many television shows, including Hey Hey It's Saturday, The
Midday Show, The Footy Show, and the Comedy Channel's Headliners. He has worked with every major comedian, from Dave Hughes to Steven Wright and even the great Phillis Diller.
Paul's one-man show, Late Night with Groucho, met with great reviews and he plans to perform it again in the near future.
Paul's comedy CD, Fantastic, which covered the early part of his career, has sold out but his first DVD, Fearless - The Stand-Up Comedy of Paul Brasch, is due for release in August 2009.

Woof Woof is Heading to Winton
Pookie-Doos Hit the Stage at Outback Festival
|
|
Due to popular demand, Brisbane children's group, The Pooki-Doos, will be entertaining the children at this year's Outback Festival. The Pooki-Doos will be performing their live shows in their usual up-beat, musical style!
Hailed as one of the Australia's best stage shows currently touring, Millie and Woof Woof will have the children and adults bopping along to their fabulous original music, and they will perform different shows throughout the week. No two shows are ever the same when Woof Woof is on stage. With his stand-up comedy routines and crazy personality, he wreaks havoc and causes Millie so much frustration that the crowd will be in stitches wondering what he will be up to next. Millie will capture everyone's hearts with her original songs, singing and dancing up a storm. This show is not restricted to the young, but is a blast for families of all descriptions! During performances, there's plenty of fun, new dances to learn, songs to sing and so much interactive mayhem that children will love every minute!! Also, you could have the chance to win one of the Pooki-Doos CD just by being there. After the performance there is a chance to meet the characters for a cuddle or a chat and purchase your own autographed Pooki-Doo CD - lots of fun and laughter for all the family!! The children's Meggsie cart races will be sponsored by the Pooki-Doos and Woof-Woof has been practising his running to participate in this event – so watch out kids! We are a bit worried that during the RAAF Roulettes display over Winton during the Festival that Paul Dolan Sky Channel (race caller at the Albion Park dogs) will be surprised when Woof-Woof gets scared and takes off!!! I'm tipping he will run the main street of Winton in record time. So watch out Winton Woof-Woof and Millie will be back in town soon and we look forward to catching up with all of our old fans and some new ones as well!!
