Outback Festival, Winton Queensland Australia - 22nd to 26th September 2009

News from the Outback Festival Winton

Issue 1, February 2009

In this Issue:
Welcome from the Outback Festival Committee
Celebrating our 20th Biennial Festival in 2009
Celebrating all things outback, the streets of Winton will come alive this September to celebrate the town's 20th Outback Festival, from Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 September 2009 (Queensland school holidays).

Big things are planned to mark this important milestone, which coincides with Queensland's 150th birthday celebrations.  Sure, we say each festival "this will be the best" - but this time we REALLY mean it!!

Over the five days we provide back-to-back entertainment for the whole family. This year we have around 40 events planned, appealing to all ages and interests. The Outback Iron Man, Iron Woman and Iron Kid competitions, the fourth Truckies Reunion, bush poetry breakfasts and a whip cracking championship are just a few of the activities on offer.

Winton is in the very heart of Matilda Highway Country between Longreach and Cloncurry. Our Shire covers a massive 53,820 square kilometers and has a population of 1500, with 900 people living in the town.

Winton is 1,375 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and 600 kilometres from Townsville. It is close to some unique attractions, including dinosaur trackways dating back to the Cretaceous Period, 95 million years ago, and the Waltzing Matilda Centre, which celebrates Australia's "other" national anthem, penned by Banjo Paterson in 1895 while holidaying at Dagworth station near Winton.

We look forward to seeing you in the outback!

A Dunny Door with a Difference!
For the past 15 years, renowned Gold Coast artist Peter J Hill has generously shared his talent with us by painting a classic outback scene on a dunny (toilet) door. The door is then auctioned, with the proceeds going to local charities. This year, Peter is joined by internationally popular Australian entertainer and artist Rolf Harris, for the Dunny Door Auction.  It's not every day you have a chance to bid on a dunny door painted by Rolf Harris, now is it?! More news to follow soon.

Will Nervous Nuggets take out the grand title again? Last year's Derby was extremely competitive, with teams from the Gold Coast, Longreach and Miles travelling to Winton to participate.
Only 20 five-person teams can take part in this unique Australian event, where four people pull a dunny 250 metres, with the jockey seated on the "thunderbox" (toilet). The Derby carries more than $4000 in prize money and trophies. Nomination forms can be found at www.outbackfestival.org/entry_forms/entry_intro.html. The closing date for nominations is 25 July!!

We are delighted to have Quilton return as our Corporate Partner for the Outback Festival's major event, the Quilton Australian Dunny Derby.
